Specialized schools are making headlines these days. York Region trustees want to shut them down. The Toronto District School Board is doing the opposite and taking registration right now for five new specialized schools.

Are specialized schools necessary to keep some kids engaged? Or are they elitist and against the ideals of equal education for all?  These are the questions that will be put to Minister of Education Laurel Broten tonight on The Agenda with Steve Paikin. It's her first interview with TVO, so we'll be watching to see what she says about the debate over specialized schools.  She'll also answer questions about the roll-out of full-day kindergarten.

Minister Broten spoke about her new role very shortly after becoming minister at People for Education's annual conference in November 2011. Together with tonight's interview, we should get a pretty good idea of the future of education in Ontario, at least for the next four years. Here's her address to the conference:
